Using Cephalexin Effectively

Cephalexin is commonly used in both adults and children, and may be used in infants with medical supervision. It is most commonly administered by capsules, though it is also found in oral solutions and IV fluids.

It may be used to treat infections in the respiratory tract, bladder, bones and joints, tonsils, ears, kidneys, and skin. In many of these cases penicillin use is the standard treatment; however, individuals with a relatively mild hypersensitivity to penicillin may be instructed to buy cephalexin instead, as it is less likely to produce anaphylaxis. Those with severe hypersensitivity to penicillin should still use caution; it does provoke reactions in about 10 percent of people who are allergic to penicillin.

In children and infants, dosage is determined by weight as well as by the type and severity of the infection, best determined by a physician. Treatment is more straightforward in adults:

• For the majority of infections, 250 mg is taken every 6 hours for 5 to 14 days, with the average duration of treatment being 10 days.
• In certain conditions, namely strep throat, bladder infections and skin infections, the typical dose is 500 mg every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days.
• In severe infections, dosage amounts may be doubled; in very high doses administration through some other route, such as IV, may be preferred to prevent liver damage.
• Taking Keflex with food is optional.
• Capsules should be taken with a full glass of fluid.

Most patients start to notice improvements within a day or two, and feel considerably better after just a few days of treatment.

Other Considerations

As with any antibiotic, there are some important considerations to keep in mind during treatment with cephalexin:

• It is not effective against all types of bacteria, nor will it have any beneficial effect on viral or fungal infections, though all can produce very similar symptoms; do not buy cephalexin to treat an undiagnosed infection.
• To prevent the development of resistant bacteria, always continue taking antibiotics for the full duration of treatment, even if no symptoms of infection remain.
• Patients with a history of liver, kidney or bowel disease are at greater risk of experiencing severe adverse effects, and should not buy cephalexin without first discussing risks with a doctor.
• Cephalexin may interact with a few other medications, reducing effectiveness; most notably metformin, probenecid, and blood thinners such as warfarin.

Most patients use cephalexin with no problems, or at most experience mild side effects such as nausea, headache, or diarrhea. Rarely, however, more serious adverse effects take place. Warning symptoms which call for medical attention include:

• Swollen or painful joints
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes
• Confusion or hallucinations
• Unusual bleeding or bruising
• Unexplained rash or itching

If the infection does not appear to be completely cleared up by the end of treatment, or if at any time during treatment the infection seems to worsen, consult a doctor.
